Emma Hewson is a Toronto-based artist and teacher making feminist, jazz-inspired indie-pop music. With a vocal style reminiscent of R&B artists like Erykah Badu, but with the softness of Norah Jones, Emma's songs showcase her many influences over years working in the Toronto music scene.
A native of Guelph, Ontario, Emma studied jazz vocal and free improvisation at Toronto’s York University before officially launching her artist project with her debut EP “EMMA,” in 2014. Since then, Emma has released many self-produced singles ranging from soft, forlorn acoustic love songs, to upbeat House and pop tracks.
As a session musician, Emma has over 15 years of performance experience, playing in corporate bands such as Supersonic and Backtracks, as well as backing up local songwriters like Chloe Watkinson and Julia Tynes. This experience facilitates an ease and playfulness on stage, and it’s clear to see that Emma’s bubbly energy has been earned over years of performing. Although she occasionally performs her original songs solo or as a duo, she’s at her best leading her 5 piece band full of other amazing Toronto musicians.
But the foundation of Emma’s life really is her home teaching business. Pivoting to running her business full-time at the beginning of the pandemic, Emma’s 13 years of teaching experience shine year-round while she guides her students. Teaching students aged 3-80, Emma’s patient and playful approach helps students develop discipline in the foundations while exploring playing-by-ear and other creative methods.
